Athlete’s foot and nail mycosis are stubborn infections. It is easy to acquire the fungus from infected scales of skin dropped on the floor of changing rooms in public swimming baths, or through contact with persons who suffer from the infection. If you want to treat these infections successfully you will have to cut the nails to the quick, perhaps even using a nail file. Apply Bioforce Cream during the day and, before you go to bed, tie some absorbent cotton soaked in Molkosan round the affected areas, leaving it on all night. The following night Spilanthes should be used instead of Molkosan. Continue using these two remedies in alternation for quite some time. I remember one doctor from Berlin telling me once quite excitedly that in his many years of medical practice he had never known an effective remedy for athlete’s foot and nail mycosis until, by chance, he came across Molkosan whey concentrate when he was standing in for another doctor elsewhere. The good results in combatting these infections may be due to the effect of concentrated lactic acid together with lactic enzymes and nutritive salts.

Primitive people have such beautiful teeth because their crude diet supplies all the elements they need to preserve their teeth in a healthy condition, whereas we, with our denatured food, suffer from all sorts of deficiencies. Beautiful teeth do not depend on being Chinese, African or Indian or whether you are white, yellow, black or brown; they depend on a natural diet. The proof of this is found among North American blacks who have been living in that modern, industrialised society for some generations. It is only since they left their native lands and adopted the diet and customs of their new environment that their teeth have begun to show signs of deterioration. Now dentists have plenty of work among the blacks of Chicago or Virginia. Their healthy resistance has disappeared and those who turn their backs on natural foods have to care for and brush their teeth just as much as anyone else. Anyone who adopts the life-style and eating habits of our modern ‘civilised’ society becomes prone to disease, including, of course, bad teeth.

BIRTHMARKS AND CANCER

I have noticed many times that we cannot be too careful with birthmarks. Take care not to scratch them; they are best left alone, for to try and get rid of them by means of remedies or surgery is not without danger. In fact, it can mean that cancer cells, which might be present, begin to spread. Probably the best time to do something about a mole (nevus), if you do want to remove it because it is too unsightly, is during childhood. Even then it is most important to choose a highly skilled surgeon who is fully aware of all the dangers involved in its removal. Birthmarks may remain inactive for decades and then, quite

suddenly, at the age of fifty or over, they begin to play up. A Swiss immigrant in British Columbia, western Canada, told me recently about such a case. A friend of his who had a birthmark on his lower back finally had it removed. Eighteen months later he began to notice glandular swellings and other abnormalities all over his body. On further examination they were found to be metastases of a malignant kind.

Even a simple irritation of a birthmark, especially when the irritation is continuous or repeated, can pose a grave danger. Clothing can cause such an irritation or the habit of scratching the mark, perhaps even making it bleed. In time, this irritation can have serious consequences.

ARTHRITIS AND GOUT – GENERAL INFORMATION

Externally, apply crushed comfrey root to the affected parts and you will find that the pain will gradually subside. Tincture of comfrey (Symphosan) is excellent also, and butterbur (Petasites officinalis) is a good supporting remedy. For further supportive medicine you can prepare an infusion made of birch leaves, imperial masterwort (Imperatoria), restharrow (Ononis spinosa), anise (Pimpinella anisum), goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea), dandelion (Taraxacum) and meadowsweet (Spiraea.) Naturally, the fresh plant extracts of these herbs are of excellent help too. Further recommendations are Juniperus, Berberis vulgaris, Urtica and, in addition, attenuated doses of Colchicum. These ingredients are all contained in our excellent remedy Imperarthritica, which should be taken as follows: five drops in a little warm water, or for better results, in potato juice, three times daily before meals. Add an extra drop every day until you reach twenty, or perhaps thirty drops if there is no sign of a severe reaction. Then reverse the procedure and decrease gradually to five drops, before increasing again to thirty drops. The dose must be adjusted to suit individual requirements even if it means reducing it to only two drops, if the effect on the respective parts or joints is strong. Imperarthritica can be used externally too: put a few drops on the hand and rub gently into the affected area. Finally, if an infection is the cause of the trouble it must be either healed or removed by other means.

A person allergic to iodine, especially in cases of exophthalmic goitre, may obtain the same quick result by using five drops of camphor tincture instead of the iodine. Again, I would like to emphasise that Echinaforce taken internally and used externally will bring sure relief.

Sinusitis can cause a great deal of pain, since the infection spreads right into the sinuses and impairs our thinking processes as well. How grateful we can be for remedies such as Cinnabaris 4x and Hepar sulph. 4x and the speedy relief they are able to give. With their help, the rapidly forming pus can be drained and the patient will be free from the unpleasant infection in a relatively short time. It is important to bring about fast relief in order to prevent it from becoming chronic, since it may reach a stage where it will stubbornly resist any treatment.

As a control centre of paramount importance, the pituitary should receive extra care and attention. Because of its important functions, it is well protected in an inaccessible bony hollow at the base of the skull. The only way to care for it is by looking after one’s general health. Thus, it is worthwhile supplying the body with wholesome food, sufficient sleep, exercise and oxygen by deep breathing. Even though we already know a great deal about this small gland, many of its secrets have yet to be discovered.

The instrument panel of a jet plane is a complete mystery to the layperson. A radio receiver small enough to fit in a watch casing is also a marvel of technology. But what is contained in the bean-sized gland – much of which we are still not aware of – surpasses everything the human mind has created a thousand times. Appreciating the intricate design and functions of our body, we should always show deep respect for it and avoid subjecting it thought lessly to stresses and strains that affect our health. The biblical psalmist expressed this most aptly when he wrote: ‘I shall laud you [God] because in a fear-inspiring way I am wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful, as my soul is very well aware.’

MUMPS

This is another frequent but usually harmless childhood disease. The commonest site of trouble is in the parotid glands, but in the case of boys, the testicles and epididymis may also be affected. Serious complications can ensue when the disease is contracted by an adult male and the essential tissue of the testicles is destroyed, resulting in sterility.

An internal remedy for mumps is Mercurius solubilis 10x; 2-3 drops or one tablet should be taken every 2-3 hours. Aconitum 4x and Belladonna 4x should be taken in alternation every half hour (also 2-3 drops). Compresses with whey concentrate (Molko-san) applied to the calves are very helpful, but only when the feet are kept warm. Hip baths (sitz baths), the temperature of which should be gradually increased from 36 °C to 44 °C (97 °F to 110°F), are also excellent; after the bath the patient should be wrapped in warm blankets. If the child’s bowels are not working properly, Arabic plant essence (Arabiaforce) is very good, but in more stubborn cases it may be necessary to give an enema. To ease the pain, apply warm compresses to the affected areas, adding a few drops of arnica or calendula (marigold) extract to the water. Make sure to let the child gargle with a weak solution of Molkosan. Another remedy which has proved itself over and over again is hot St John’s wort oil. Saturate a cloth with the hot oil, or better still, mix potter’s clay with St. John’s wort oil, then apply to the inflamed area and cover with a very hot water bottle. This will soothe and heal. To complete the cure, give one tablet of Silicea 12x (silica) three times a day.

Therefore, additions like pine essence or cubes containing the green iridescent colouring Natrium fluorescentum should be avoided. The same warning applies to acrid herbs like celandine and cranesbill which, although of great benefit for eczematous skin troubles and rashes, if used at all, should be added in only the smallest quantities. Babies have very sensitive skin and even seemingly harmless herbal additions to their bath water can cause quite unexpected reactions. The bath herbs listed below, however, are recommended for baby care. In all cases, only weak infusions should be used, since light stimulation is to be preferred for babies.

Horsetail contains organic silica and exerts a beneficial influence upon the skin.

Lemon balm is indicated for nervous babies who need soothing.

Lady’s mantle will give elasticity and tone to the tissues when they are spongy and flabby. (In cases of a tendency to hernia, this herb will help to strengthen the tissues.)

Camomile is good for indigestion, stomach aches and minor metabolic disturbances.

Marigold is useful when the skin is sensitive and affected by

rashes and impurities. (The flowers may be used as well as the leaves.)

Wild thyme, also called Mother of Thyme, has proved its worth as an excellent bath herb and is especially valuable for babies who catch colds easily. Parents who themselves have weak lungs should give their babies this herbal bath from time to time.

Ribwort should not be underestimated as a help in cases of a weak bladder; however, such a tendency does not become apparent in babies until they are toilet trained.
