In just a few years, this quick-as-lightning erection response will have slowed down. A man in his 30’s is not likely to suffer the embarrassment Paul so fondly recalled. It takes the more mature man a bit more time to become erect. In healthy men, this is a gradual change, and the slowed response can lead a man to be more interested and involved in foreplay, to the benefit and pleasure of himself and his partner.
Jennifer has been married to Douglas for 15 years. They met while both were in college, and married 2 years after graduation. She’s noticed a change in Douglas, but for her, it’s a positive one: “Doug has always been a good lover,” she says, smiling. “But I have to say that he’s become less—well, hurried, in the last few years. He’s much more willing to hold me and caress me. When we were in school, he was much more task oriented. Now, he’ll spend lots of time with me before starting intercourse—and our sex life is terrific.”
As a man gets older, it will usually take him a longer time to reach orgasm and ejaculate. A man may find it easier to control his ejaculation, and to delay it. Jennifer has noticed this change in Doug, and both of them are happy about it. “It’s much easier to last longer,” Doug says. “In some ways, sex is better now than it was a few years ago. I used to have a greater sense of urgency. Now I can relax and enjoy myself without consciously having to try so hard to delay my orgasm.” For many men in their early 20’s, this would be difficult or impossible.
Generally, as a man gets older, he’ll notice that his orgasms may be somewhat less intense. And the amount of fluid he ejaculates is somewhat less. The orgasm may last a shorter period of time. The amount of force which propels the semen out of the penis is reduced. Even men in their 30’s may notice this last change: “I notice a difference in ejaculation. If s not as strong as when I was 18. I squirt less far. When I was younger there’d be this tremendous pressure,” says Paul.
