24 March 2009PRE-MENSTRUAL TENSION (PMT)

Pre-menstrual tension affects 70% of women. Symptoms include depression, headaches, painful breasts, water retention, fatigue. Actually, it should be called pre-menstrual syndrome. The tension side is only part of the problem.

PMT can be divided into four subgroups: PMT A (anxiety), PMT C (craving), PMT D (depression) and PMT H (hyperhydration).

Some vitamins and herbs can be of great value and give positive results when used for treatment of PMT. One of the vitamins is vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 acts as a mild diuretic and has proven to be of enormous value to women who suffer pre-menstrual tension. Include it with a multivitamin formula so that you are not just taking one vitamin-by itself. A PMT formula available in health food stores has been adjusted to suit all requirements.

If you are showing signs of fluid retention such as painful breasts or swollen fingers, then you should supplement your diet with celery, dandelion, and juniper tablets. These are natural herbal diuretics and can relieve the symptoms of painful breasts and fluid retention. Evening primrose oil has been clinically proven to decrease the symptoms of PMT. Glycyrrhiza is a recommended supplement as it competes with aldosterone for binding sites. Aldosterone, a hormone secreted by the adrenal cortex, is elevated in the blood 7 days before menstruation.

Limit coffee and dairy products and eat vegetable protein.
