If you and your doctor decide you’re a good candidate, you’ve got to choose the type of implant you want. Today, implants come in several basic types. The one that’s been around the longest is called the semirigid implant. It works by artificially creating stiffness in the corpora cavernosa of the penis. The implant, made of plastic or silicone, replaces the rigidity that would normally be supplied by blood during an erection. Naturally, since a man has two corpora cavernosa running parallel to each other along the length of the penis, you get one implant for each cylinder. Each rod feels about as stiff as a soft carrot when you hold it in your hand. Of course, they are bendable. As men vary in size, the rods come in different lengths and circumferences. And just as a man may have slightly differently sized feet, so may his corpora cavernosa be different. This is no problem, because the doctor simply uses a different size in each chamber.
When the prosthesis is sized and inserted properly, it provides enough ridigity to the shaft of the penis and enough support to the base to allow intercourse. The implant provides stability to the head of the penis, although it does not make the head hard. It also increases the diameter of the penis, although not as much as a natural erection. And once the implant is in, the erection will not subside; it won’t come and go like a regular erection. The prosthesis should be easily concealed under close-fitting underwear, but a man with a semirigid implant should realize that he will appear to have a partial erection when he is naked. This may be of concern to men who belong to athletic clubs or have other activities where nudity is common.
