24 March 2009COLD SORES — HERPES (GENITAL AND SIMPLEX)
Cold sores are a viral infection {herpes simplex) and are highly contagious. The name cold sores apply to their appearance when you are suffering with a cold. They can also accompany periods of stress. The reason they manifest at this time is because your immune system is underactive when you have a cold, an infection, or are under stress.
There are many things that can be done nutritionally to help prevent cold sores. Limit arginine which is an amino acid contained in protein foods. If the diet has high arginine content and not enough L-lysine, which is another amino acid which is essential for growth and repair, then cold sores seem to proliferate. It is best to eliminate foods such as chocolate, which is very rich in arginine, and some of the red meats.
Taking a supplement containing zinc, vitamin C and L-lysine can be of enormous benefit. Research has shown that the combination of these nutrients can help prevent the recurrence of cold sores. The cold sore virus can lay dormant during periods of good health and low stress, so it is important to keep up the supplement and dietary program for at least three months.
Another herb that can help fight viral infections is Echinacea. It can help stimulate the immune system and is listed in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia as an anti-viral herb.
The following supplements are also effective when used to treat herpes genitalis or genital herpes, cold sores on male and female genitals which are contagious and painful when present.
