Bites and stings can be very painful and some people have life-threatening allergic reactions to the venom.
There are many preparations available, manufactured and natural. Our grandmothers used to apply blue-bag to bee stings. There are many other things you can do to help reduce the pain of bites and stings. Bull ant sting can be relieved quite quickly by using the root of the bracken fern. Just pull the fern out, break the root and apply the sap directly to the sting area. It makes a difference.
Sandflies
Taking a B group vitamin in the diet can help prevent sandfly bites. Many people are very allergic to sandfly bites and B group vitamins can help and must be taken before entering an area where there are sandflies.
In Australian waters there are many varieties of jellyfish, in Queensland, The box jellyfish is very dangerous. Its sting can be fatal. Common household vinegar can be very helpful, especially for a box jellyfish bite. It should be applied freely to the area. The tentacles must be removed with tweezers. If the sting is from a box jellyfish send for medical aid.
Bluebottle
With the bluebottle, remove tentacles with tweezers or fingers, wash with water. Apply crushed ice wrapped in a tea towel to the area stung until pain is relieved. If a large area is stung or the casualty is distressed in any way, seek medical aid.
