30 March 2009ALLERGY TO BUILDING AND DECORATING MATERIALS/MOULD TREATMENTS: NATURAL PAINTS AND VARNISHES
Most treatments for mould growth are based on chlorine bleach, or other powerful chemicals. If you are not chemically sensitive, bleach is effective, but if you are chemically sensitive, it is a risky chemical. Borax does not cause sensitivity and can be effective where mould growth is not serious.
Mould growth results from persistent condensation and damp. It is a good idea in the long term to solve the problems at source by eradicating the damp or keeping the place as dry as you can, rather than using chemicals to remove the symptoms.
You can obtain paints and varnishes for all applications which are based on natural solvents, oils, resins and other chemicals. Some people with chemical sensitivity tolerate these well; others do not. You are best advised to treat these as cautiously as you would any other chemicals, unless you know that you are not sensitive to plant terpenes, oils and resins.
Materials of this kind are supplied by The Healthy House and Livos, who will also give you thorough advice on what to choose and any potential problems. Some of their products avoid specific natural chemical allergens. Livos will supply small samples for testing.
